Another installment of our top ten spin off podcast.

This one is all about cartoons from the 1980s. Can we name the top 10 most popular ones, in ten minutes… That is the nature of this challenge beast.

We did forget to mention a few classics though… ‘Rude Dog and the Dweebs’ for starters… Though, we did pretty well in the allotted time, especially when you factor in that it is almost impossible to mention a cartoon or show from your youth, without instantly singing the theme tune… Which really eats up your minutes, if you are participating in a timed quiz.

Three weeks on since the gruesome act was carried out, and our show today is dedicated to Ann. Her lifelong commitment to defending free speech, especially for those who disagreed with her, will continue to be part of her legacy. The fruits of which we can all thankfully enjoy. Ann may have represented a constituency in her years of service as a politician, but she worked for the entire nation when she so vivaciously defended the right to openly express ideas. #debatenothate

Spip-Sliding From Pandemic To War. 2022

The thing about pandemics is… They cost money and they cost money with little return. The thing about war is… It costs money, but it makes money. So, as the itchy fingers move forward they are already putting wheels in motion for flexing their muscles.

The usual players will be looking to expand their influence if not their geographical control. The US, The UK, China, Russia, Etc… Not so much the EU, but France is usually keen to enter conflicts, Germany less so these days, North and South Korea backed by their proxy master game-playing titans may well feature, and of course there is always the possibility of a left-field surprise.

Waning economies and the tensions brought about, if not at the least exasperated by the pandemic, may sway any logical thinking, if it doesn’t override it altogether.

What will the conflict be? Well, it could be multiple conflicts. Russia and the US have long since been at loggerheads, for no other reason than they fancy a fight, but just like two school yard bullies, they prefer picking on someone that they know they can overpower, not so much are they keen on picking on someone who might ‘serve them their arse’. The US will probably have most of Europe on their side, and China may just have Russia on their side, but the rhetoric of more talk and less action will always play into the hands of any aggressor, and the EU and the UN are famous for talking, and possibly just that, negotiating a nothingness until the threat is not so much neutralised as it becomes tomorrow’s chip paper.

Russia holds aces over energy, especially where Europe is concerned, and China holds aces over global manufacture, at affordable prices (even if the quality of its exports is often somewhat dubious). China also owes the US lots and lots of cash, and the export of Russian energy are its strongest contribution to GDP. So, we are left with a bit of a mess. If your strength of your economy depends on sating your supposed enemy, then at what point do you jeopardise the status quo?

There is a little role reversal here with two of the main protagonists, there is no doubting that Vladimir Putin is a stronger character than Joe Biden, a mirror image of what the world saw during the face-off of the Cuban missile crisis in the early 1960’s, where the ghostly figure of Nikita Khrushchev 'blinked’ when the forthright, whirling dervish John F. Kennedy promised that there would be no backing down over the strategic missile placements in Cuba. Putin has already shown with Crimea that he is willing to act, whilst others ruminate, and that may yet continue with Ukraine, as tensions run high again. Russia feels threatened with the proximity of military might just as the US did all those decades ago.

War is more of a natural state of play as opposed to peace, there has in a historical context been very little peace in the world. Europe as a blood stained warring continent has only achieved relative peace since the end of the second world war due to the amalgamation of similarity, in the same vein that monarchist led territories used to rule with the inter marring of royal members.

Empire building is not over, it is just less achievable, not just in terms of land, but in terms of business, and influence also. The bigger the beasts get, the more they devour, and the more they devour, the less that remains for anyone else.

The pursuit of global dominance continues, and in this age where every inch of land is known, little can be left to the imagination. The idea of empire building itself is these days more of a resistance against empire shrinking, of course this is a judgement on your adversaries’ control as much as your own.

The economic idea of inflation, and the basic idea that any monetary system should increase, get bigger, grow, is applied to most human situations by the greedy. There should always be more, for if there is not more, there could be the same, and the same can soon become less, and no greedy person that has ever lived wants less. It is this very desire to put a quantity and a price on possessions that spurs these greedy folk on, often they are competing among themselves, but they judge their glory by the excesses of others. This is a race to the bottom, and will never be a mantra for popularism, as by its nature it excludes the masses from elitists. The only problem with greed, if you wish to justify it by saying that it incentivises people, is that it knows no end, greed does not stop, it does not rest, it is in simple terms an addiction. Greed exists only to become more, regardless of whom it affects, regardless of what it inflicts. Just like the Coronavirus, It would seem the troubles yet to come are essentially the troubles that have been before, the troubles that have always been. So in 2022 try not to be greedy, and don’t empower those that are, they are every bit your foe as any virus could ever be.

Happy new year from everyone at Get Fawked.

The Best It Can Get.

As we look back over the two years of this pandemic we gain some insight, though as people in positions of responsibility like to lament ‘it is still too early to tell’. Or is it? The entire debacle from start to finish can be broken down into chapters, and just like a book the twists and turns that took place on a global scale made the story quite compelling, but where does it end? Or has it already slipped away in the night, like a meandering, forest dwelling loner?

The best scenario that we could probably hope for, would be a highly contagious, and prevalent week form of the virus which prepares the immune system (in the majority of cases) for any additional and possibly more lethal versions of first the virus, and ultimately the disease(s) it may cause. This would be the quickest, most effective, most economic, and least damaging path through this situation. Currently we have a few vaccines which give the human immune system a heads up on what may lay ahead, but science can rarely produce what nature can. The vaccines, I am sure have helped to a large degree, but with the approach lacking a 'preparation mutation’ it leaves us in the icy grip of a failure catalog. This failure catalog has many entries, from the short term there is the closing of businesses, the lack of travel and the stranding of people around the world, who cannot afford to circumvent the system like some 'chosen few’. With the lock-downs came anxiety, and depression to minds that had never been touched by the black dog. Care homes were filled with infected people, driven out of hospitals to make way for more Trojan horses, whom in turn were sent to care homes, as though they had a job to finish. This for me will be the underlining failure above all, as it is a needless failure, the powers that be are guilty in that case of gross negligence, how else can we accept that these decisions could have been made, if they were not made badly?

We knew from the start that this virus had the potential to infect anyone, we learned quickly that the disease that it caused was on average, markedly worse for the elderly and those with underlying health problems. Still, people were shifted from hospitals (or disease farms) to take up residency with those most vulnerable without being cleared first. It harks back to the illogical inadequacy of blood screening of the 1980’s, when blood plasma was imported from US convicts to the UK. Most of this blood matter was not screened for hepatitis and latterly HIV. These are the kinds of historical, needless mistakes that resonate in today’s practice. 'Lessons must be learnt’ comes the unimaginative rhetoric, but in reality they are often not.

Also included in the failure catalog (if you will indulge my slight return) is the lateral flow test, not for its inaccuracy as 70%ish seems better than nothing, but for the future generations that will be fishing billions of these things out of the oceans. Along with all the other paraphernalia included in conducting a screening, and a testing on each.

Our greatest clinicians, chemists, doctors, nurses, laboratory staff, virologists, epidemiologists, et all, have been up to their bow ties in it over these last two years. The set back to our global medicinal progress is immeasurable, as their expertise has been wrapped up in this primary threat. The backlog of patients requiring treatment for existing conditions, has also claimed many lives, as these cases were pushed back to make way.

There is enough from anyone country on this topic to fill a volume of novels, let alone approaching the subject on an earth wide scale. We (I am sure) will try to cover as much of this as we can, as succinctly as we can, when the podcast goes out.

Ultimately, if this is as bad as it gets, it could have been far worse. For those who have lost loved ones directly or indirectly due to the rise of this pandemic, our hearts go out to you.

It looks as though this coronavirus is here to stay, and will mutate itself evermore, similar to influenza, in which case the best we can hope for is fewer fatalities, and for most, cold like symptoms.

We are also going to require fast actions by those in power, tougher decisions, better insight, and most importantly though seemingly least likely, common sense.

If there were to be a new viral pandemic to hit this planet over the next few years, I can only hope that it will be dealt with, with 'lessons learned’, said not as rhetoric or with irony, but in the very literal and meaningful sense. That, though not perfect, is our best human response to any crisis, knowledge is the foundation of science and reason, and they are our best tools to negate any problem.

That for the future, is… The best it can get.
